One of the most common questions I get asked about WP Email Capture is does it have a popup abililty? In short, it doesn’t. The beauty of WP Email Capture though is that you can use it with any mailing list software, and you can use it with popup providers too. One such plugin is the excellent OptinMonster.
OptinMonster is great as it targets users smartly with their popups, rather than just pop them in their face every post or page launch. I was asked to try OptinMonster by it’s co-owner – Syed Balkhi, to see if it integrates with WP Email Capture. In short – it does, and takes about quarter of an hour. It’s an incredibly easy plugin to use and compatible with WordPress. I strongly recommend you try it out.
To integrate with WP Email Capture is incredibly simple. These instructions are to be used for both the free and premium versions of WP Email Capture (though please read the differences at the bottom), and can be used with all versions of OptinMonster.
Assumptions
For this guide, I’ve assumed you’ve done the following:-
- Installed WP Email Capture.
- Installed OptinMonster (they provide a guide on how to do this when you log in).
- Set up WP Email Capture (read the guide on how to set up WP Email Capture Free).
- Set up the basic level of OptinMonster (as in everything but the WP Email Capture integration).
Method
1. Write a Test Post with WP Email Capture Shortcode
To begin with, we need to get the code behind the shortcode for WP Email Capture. The easiest and best way to do this is to use the displayed form shortcode. Create a new post and add ‘[wp_email_capture_form]‘ to the post in question. Save it and preview the post in your browser.
2. Copy The Form’s Source Code.
On the preview page for post you’ve just created, there will be the rendered form. View the source (in Google Chrome, it’s Ctrl+U for Windows/Cmd+Alt+U for Mac), and do a search for “<form name=’wp_email_capture_display'”. You should find the code associated with the form. Copy from before the “<form name=’wp_…” to after the “</form>”, and save it somewhere. If the code selected looks like the code in the image above, you’re on the right track.
3. Paste the code into the Popup Form
Go into OptinMonster in the WordPress dashboard, and edit the form you want to integrate with WP Email Capture. In the “Integration” area, make sure the “Custom HTML Optin Form” is selected in the “Email Provider” section. Then paste the code copied in section 2, into the “Custom HTML Form Code” box. Click save and your form should appear. If it doesn’t then in the premium support area has a thread dedicated to this post.
WP Email Capture Premium Differences
The premium version instructions are the same as the free version, however if you change any meta values at a later stage, or the name of the default fields, then you will have to change the code.
